How to do it

Work from the whole portrait towards selected details. Keep early marks light, compare angles and distances frequently, and step back from the drawing before deciding it is finished.

Set the scene. Place a mirror securely and choose steady light that makes the main shapes of your face easy to see.
Map the whole. Sketch the head and shoulders with light simple shapes before drawing individual features.
Check proportions. Compare distances and angles, making corrections while the marks are still light.
Build tone. Add the largest shadow shapes first, then develop only the details that support the portrait.
Reflect. Date the drawing and note one observation that surprised you and one thing you would try differently. (Optional)
